With predicted rains staying at bay, Sedalia Parks and Recreation Landscape Supervisor Cindy Kretzer waters the flowers at Katy Park’s “Whiteman: Legacy of Freedom” memorial sculpture and garden Wednesday afternoon. She has plans to add more plants to the Whiteman garden this year. Last year many of the plants died due to too much rain. Kretzer added that she grows most of the plants and flowers in the parks department greenhouse at Liberty Park.

Kretzer said she begins taking cuttings in the fall to grow new plants. Some plants she grows from seed. Kretzer added that she and her crew start planting the park gardens on May 10 and try to finish by May 31.
Sedalia Parks and Recreation landscapers are responsible for the gardens at Liberty Park, Centennial Park, Katy Park, Hubbard Park and Clover Dell and usually use 2,100 gallons of water a week. Landscape Supervisor Cindy Kretzer said that amount may be on the low side if there isn’t much rain. They have two trucks with 210 gallon tanks and one with a 325 gallon tank.
Landscape Supervisor Kretzer waters a mound of bachelor’s buttons, a perennial flower, at Katy Park on Wednesday. In the park’s greenhouse she grows annuals such as petunia, lantana, sweet potato vine, zinnia, saliva and hibiscus. “We try to put out more perennials every year.” she said.
