National Weather Service issues flood warning for Pettis County

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill issued a flood warning for eastern Pettis County on Tuesday. Due to constant rain by 1 p.m., rainwater had begun to buildup along Boonville Road in front of the historic Monsees Barn, north of Smithton. Sedalia, Smithton, Otterville and Pilot Grove were included in the flood warning.

Flooding began to breech a low-water bridge on Monsees, Road early Tuesday afternoon. The National Weather Service stated that at 10 a.m. 2 inches of rain had already fallen in the last 24 hours and rain would continue throughout the afternoon. They urged caution for those living in low-lying areas.

A small stream along Rattlesnake Road, south of Smithton, began to rise Tuesday afternoon due to excessive rainfall in the Pettis County area.

Flat Creek, at Rattlesnake Road, was rising at 12:30 p.m. with the current picking up speed as constant rain fell in the area Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Pettis County for tonight, and with more rain expected later in the week residents are advised to use caution when traveling.

“We haven’t seen any major problems yet,” Sedalia-Pettis County Director of Emergency Management Dave Clippert said early Tuesday morning. “But we always advise drivers to use caution when conditions are like this and to watch for standing water on the roadways.”

At the time the Democrat spoke to Clippert, Pettis County was only under a watch, which has since been upgrade to a warning.

Clippert said he expected the area to receive more than 2.5 inches of rain since the front moved in Monday to the expected end of the showers today.

“We’ve had a good steady rain (Monday) night and (Tuesday) morning, which we needed,” Clippert added.

The National Weather Service is predicting partly cloudy skies for Thursday, but there is a prediction for more rain Friday. With a 60 percent chance of rain Friday, some creeks may be out of their banks, according to Clippert.

While the weekend forecast is calling for a 20 percent chance of precipitation, the form it takes may still be in question.

High temperatures Saturday are predicted to be in the low 40-degree range with overnight lows in the 20s.

“I don’t think we have anything to be concerned with in our area,” Clippert said. “But, there is a slight chance that the Kansas City area could see some snowflakes mixed in with the rain if they get any precipitation.”

For people who are thinking long-range to Thanksgiving weekend, forecasters are predicting a 40 percent chance of showers Thanksgiving Day, with a rain/snow mix possible over the travel weekend.

On Sunday, Nov. 29, the expected high from the National Weather Service for Pettis County is 39 degrees with lows expected to be in the upper 20s.
