Pettis County residents still have more than a month until property sheets are due, but those who file early can beat the long lines closer to the deadline.

The forms are due March 1 and residents should look over the form carefully before turning it in. State statute requires all assessors’ offices to impose a penalty if the sheet is returned after the deadline.

“They want to fill out everything they own Jan. 1,” Pettis County Assessor Karissa Logan said. “That’s the important date, what was owned on that day.”

The sheets have the previous year’s reported property printed at the top. If there are no changes for 2016, residents should check the “no change” box and return the form.

If there are changes for 2016, residents should check the “changes have been made” box.

“If something was sold then mark through that,” Logan said. “If something was acquired they can put the year, make, model and all the information on the form.”

Residents have several options when it comes to filing their property sheets: mailing it in with a postmark of March 1 or earlier, placing it in the dropbox outside the Pettis County Courthouse, turning it in at the assessor’s office on the second floor of the courthouse, or online.

Residents can file at pettis.missouriassessors.com and follow the link on the left side of the page that says “e-file personal property.”

“At the top of the sheet, if they would like to file online, there’s a website and then a unique pin number so they can go to the website and file online,” Logan explained.

She added that if a resident has moved, they need to indicate the new address on the form. If someone still has not received their personal property sheet but should have, Logan said they should stop by or call her office.
