SEDALIA — State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners sophomore forward Thelma Williams has signed to play next season at Wright State University, a Division I school in Dayton, Ohio. The Detroit native is the fifth member of the Lady Roadrunners basketball class to announce plans for next year.
Williams helped SFCC to a 22-8 record and a Region 16 tournament championship in her one season as a Lady Roadrunner. She was her team’s third leading scorer, averaging 10 points per game. She also pulled down 5.6 rebounds per game while playing in 29 games and starting 18 as a sophomore. She earned All-Region 16 second-team honors and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference first-team all-conference honors.
Williams shot 48.6 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 63.9 percent from the free-throw line.
“Thelma was exactly the type of player we needed,” said Lady Roadrunners head basketball coach Kevin Bucher. “We needed an athletic defender who could get out and run. She started shooting three-point shots better as the season went along. Her experience helped our freshman class; she really had a great year.”
Bucher believes Williams’ best college basketball is ahead.
“The Wright State coaching staff was almost shocked at how well she played,” Bucher said. “They were surprised at her athleticism and her ability to stop, pull up and hit the jump shot. They are happy to have her.
“We were pleased Thelma chose to attend State Fair Community College and wish her the very best.”
Williams plans to major in business at Wright State.
