A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Pettis County until 11:15 p.m., as torrential rain across the area is expected to cause flash flooding.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Pettis County, Johnson County and southwestern Saline County until 11:15 p.m.

According to NWS, at 5:17 p.m. doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Sedalia, Warrensburg, Knob Noster, Holden, Sweet Springs, Whiteman Air Force Base, La Monte, Smithton, Leeton, Green Ridge, Chilhowee, Kingsville, Houstonia, Centerview, Hughesville, Fayetteville and Post Oak.

A Flood Advisory has been issued until 10 p.m. for minor flooding in poor drainage areas for southwestern Johnson County, southeastern Cass County and northwestern Henry County. Some locations that could experience flooding include Warrensburg, Holden, Garden City, Creighton, Chilhowee, Kingsville, Centerview, Gunn City, Blairstown, Quick City and La Tour.

Citizens are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads.

Pettis County is still in a Tornado Watch until 10 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for portions of southern Iowa, eastern Kansas and northwest Missouri. Primary threats include a few tornadoes likely with a couple intense tornadoes, possible widespread large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2.5 inches in diameter. Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph are also possible.

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill issued notice Thursday afternoon that some of the alerts they have issued Thursday have not properly opened NOAA Weather Radios. NWS is working to correct the issue, but is asking residents to ensure they have more than one way to monitor weather alerts.

Other options include radio and television broadcasts, and the Pettis County Sheriff’s NIXLE service. Sign up for NIXLE by texting the word PETTIS to 888777.
