The Sedalia School District 200 Board of Education is expected to vote on two measures during tonight’s meeting that will affect the district as they move forward next year and in the future.
Both the 2016-17 salary schedule and the district’s five-year maintenance plans are on the agenda as decision items.
“Last month I brought to the board the proposals for the district’s salary schedule for both certified and non-certified staff members,” Superintendent Brad Pollitt said. “The board is scheduled to vote on those measures at our meeting Monday night.”
Under the proposal made by Pollitt, $250 would be added to the base salary and $250 would be added to the master’s column.
Additionally, some steps that had been frozen on the salary schedule in columns D, E, and F would be released. Those columns represent teachers who have a master’s degree and additional hours toward a higher degree.
Non-certified staff would see an increase of $0.10 per hour and additional steps would be opened as well.
The administration is also proposing to pay 100 percent of the district’s insurance for staff members for 2016-17.
If the board votes to approve the salary schedule, the base salary for the district will be $34,750 for a first-year teacher.
With the addition to the base and changes to the salary schedule, along with the addition of 15 staff positions whose hiring was approved at the Feb. 22, meeting, the district is expected to spend $1.5 million on salaries.
Assistant Superintendent for Building, Grounds, and Support Services Steve Triplett will present the five-year maintenance plan.
The on-going plan for the district addresses maintenance projects for the districts’ nine facilities.
“We bring the maintenance plan to the board every year at this time,” Pollitt said. “We always have upkeep and maintenance that we need to address, especially with the age of some of our buildings.”
Pollitt commented that most of the items on the list from 2015-16 have already been completed and the one major item remaining would be addressed once the building project at Smith-Cotton High School is completed.
“We need to replace the bus path and service road at Smith-Cotton but we will not begin that until the construction is done there,” Pollitt said. “The other item that we are already looking at that will be one of our biggest projects is the tile roof at Horace Mann (Elementary).
“That is scheduled for the 2017-18 school year,” Pollitt added. “Most of the items on the upcoming list are routine maintenance items that always need to be addressed including sidewalk repair and replacement and parking lots.”
The board is also expected to vote on the use of a commercial purchasing card.
As reported at last month’s board meeting by CFO Dr. Harriet Wolfe, the program would allow authorized employees to make business-to-business electronic payments at designated businesses.
The cards would have a single transaction limit of $200 and there is a monthly credit limit of $1,500 under the plan. According to information from Wolfe in the board meeting packet, use of the cards would simplify the payment process and reduce costs to the district.
The board will reorganize and elect officers and will elect a delegate and an alternate to represent them on the Missouri School Board Association.
The winter sports programs will be recognized by the board at the meeting.
