S-C wrestling defeats Knob Noster 66-10

The Smith-Cotton wrestling team tuned up for a potential West Central Conference title Tuesday night by posting dual match wins over Blair Oaks and Knob Noster in the S-C gym.

The Tigers started the evening with a 44-21 win over Blair Oaks. Successive wins by Josh Hartman (152 pounds, pinfall), Gauge Young (160, 11-2 decision), Barry Rivera (170, pinfall) and Noah Aziere (182, 8-3) sewed up the match for S-C.

The Tigers later topped an undermanned Knob Noster squad, 66-10; S-C picked up six decisions from the Panthers’ open weight classes.

Aziere had a dominating night, pinning Knob Noster’s Eric Scobey to finish with two wins. Tigers sophomore Blake Pomajzl matched Aziere, posting an 8-2 win over Blair Oaks’ Bo Thomas and pinning Knob Noster’s Connor Cruz. After the victories, Aziere looked forward to tonight’s WCC dual at O’Hara against both the Celtics and Nevada. S-C wins the conference title outright with a win over Nevada.

“All we need to do is the same thing we have been doing all year, which is wrestle smart, get the points we need and don’t give up the pin,” Aziere said. He’ll face Chaden Brandt of Nevada, who he called his toughest WCC opponent.

“I’m going to go in there like I always do, wrestle confident, wrestle smart, trust in my technique and what my coaches have taught me,” Aziere said.

Tigers Head Coach Charlie McFail said the team had solid performances last weekend at Kearney as well as a good practice Monday.

” I thought they did a good job, I was pleased with what happened tonight,” McFail said. “We’ve got a big matchup with O’Hara and Nevada. I think we’re ready. … I’m comfortable with where we’re at.”
