Trotting into a New Year

Several local horse riders gathered at the Clarendon Road parking area at Katy Trail State Park late Friday morning for a two-hour ride in the crisp New Year’s Day weather. Tracy Phegley, second from front, of Sweet Springs, said she decided to create the event on Facebook and put a “call out” to friends about the New Year’s Day ride. Phegley, who was riding her horse Redman, said there were about 10 area riders from, Corder, Hughesville, Sedalia, Marshall, Stover and Sweet Springs.

Hughesville resident Jenny Cornine’s horse, Shadow, seems to be smiling for the camera Friday morning before the group set out for a ride on the Katy Trail. Cornine said she’d been riding since she was 8-years-old. She added that Shadow was in high spirits and ready for the day’s ride.

Morgan Schaeperkoetter, of Corder, sits atop her horse Cannon, while Kinzie Miller, of Marshall, gives the steed a friendly pat on the nose Friday morning. Miller planned to ride a horse named Sioux, with her fellow horse aficionados, down the Katy Trail on the group’s New Year’s Day trip.
