The Sedalia School District 200 will meet tonight to approve the filing dates for the April 2016 election.

The terms for current board members David Wolfe, and Diana Nichols will expire in April.

Wolfe, who is the current board secretary, has served on the board since 2010. Nichols was elected in 2013.

State statutes require that candidates for the board must be citizens of the United States and resident taxpayers of the district, who have resided in Missouri for one year preceding their election or appointment, and must be at least 24 years old.

The district’s board members serve three-year terms.

The board will also vote on an agreement with the Missouri State Fairgrounds to use the Mathewson Exhibition Center as a possible site for the district’s graduation ceremonies.

“As with last year we are planning to hold the graduation ceremony at Tiger Stadium,” Superintendent of Sedalia 200, Brad Pollitt said. “But we know all too well how fickle the weather can be.

“There is always a possibility of rain or excessive heat or some other situation the day of graduation that would keep us from having an outdoor ceremony,” he added. “We want to have the Mathewson on reserve in the event that we need to use that facility.”

The board will also be provided information on substitute pay for teachers and substitute para-professional pay.

“It is becoming more difficult to secure substitutes for the district,” Pollitt said. “Our sub pool is continually getting smaller and so we looked into some of the reasons for that.

“We found that we are in the middle range of what area schools pay for substitutes,” Pollitt said. “We are proposing to increase their pay a dollar an hour to bring the district in line with other schools”

Currently, the district pays $9.25 an hour for individuals who have a substitute certificate and $10 for those who are certified substitutes.

The district staff has used 200 less sick days last year over previous years, thanks in part to a new policy that pays teachers for their un-used sick days at the end of the year. The policy also and allows the staff member not to lose the days that are reimbursed.

The board will also be provided reports from the parents as teachers program, the early childhood special education program and quarterly building reports.

The board meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Parkview Elementary, 1901 South New York Ave. For more information, call the central office at 829-6450.
