Historical restoration and decorative paint artist John Allen Kehde Jr. talks about the mural he’s painting on the south side of Chelsea’s Antiques on Tuesday morning in downtown Sedalia. He noted he is home on a break from working with Evergreene Architectural Arts in New York City and told his mother Chelsea Kehde he would paint a mural on her building while in town.
Kehde, who works all over the country, uses exterior house paint to recreate an ink non-objective drawing on the brick wall of Chelsea’s Antiques on Tuesday. Kehde has worked on nine different state capitol buildings and twice on the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. For this project, he began the painting at 3 a.m. Sunday by drawing it after projecting the image on the brick.
John Kehde Jr. works on a non-objective, nine-by-12-foot, mural Tuesday morning in downtown Sedalia. He said, weather permitting, he hoped to finish the painting by Wednesday night. He added that painting on brick takes four times longer to complete than painting on other surfaces.
