The Smith-Cotton volleyball team won the Class 4, district 9 title on Tuesday in Troy.
The Lady Tigers beat host Troy Buchanan in two sets before beating Battle in three sets to take the title.
S-C lost the first set against Battle 25-20, but won 25-15, 25-20 to complete the comeback.
“In that first set we got behind eight or nine points and our team battled back,” said S-C coach Darcia Koetting. “I knew when we fought that battle the first game, they had that fighting spirit in them. I knew they were going to take it. They don’t give up. They were detirmined.”
In the final, Courtney Koetting had 16 assists, 14 kills, two aces and 10 digs. Darby Simon had three kills and two digs. Emilee Edgar had a kill, an ace, an assist and three digs. Montana Hedrick had two assists, six kills, two blocks, four aces and 14 digs. Tori Jacobi had 17 assists, two blocks and 16 digs. Bailey Curry had eight kills, one block, one ace and seven digs. Brittany Borke had eight digs. Miranda Gunn had one dig. Fernanda Alexander had nine digs.
For Smith-Cotton, it is the first district volleyball title since 1979.
“It’s just really amazing,” Darcia Koetting said. “I couldn’t ask for a better group of girls who put in show much effort. It’s not just a one or two year effort. It’s nine years.”
S-C will play at Willard on Saturday in the sectional round. The winner will play in the quarterfinal with that winner advancing to the semifinals on Oct. 30 in Cape Girardeau.
