While most adults have the same typical New Year’s resolution each year, Parkview Elementary students were working on some creative resolutions in art class this week.
Art teacher Janice Hargrave had students in grades second, third and fourth working on New Year’s projects, which she said focused on two goals.
“They learn to create a complex pattern, and they learn to set goals for themselves, which is a district goal for students,” Hargrave explained.
The students created patterns inside “2017” on their project. On the inside of the folded paper, the students wrote goals for four areas: What I want to learn, Where I want to go, What I want to give, and What I want to teach.
“It’s not the most complex project, but they’re engaged and expressing their own ideas,” Hargrave said.
Hargrave said kindergarten students worked on a simpler version of the project. They just worked with numbers and learning the year, which Hargrave noted is an example of cross-curriculum learning.
Thursday morning, third graders were in Hargrave’s art classroom working on their projects, which included some inspiring, lofty and creative goals for 2017.
“I want to go to Hawaii and I want to learn how to draw shadows,” Jaxsen Hundley said.
“I want to learn to divide by decimals and I want to go to the Andes,” Beck Daley said.
“I want to learn how to make glass and pottery,” Orianna Casdorph said. “I want to go to Silver Dollar City and Washington, D.C., and a museum I’ve been wanting to go to forever.”
“I want to give food to the poor and I want to teach my little brother how to add,” Lily Ogden said.
“I want to go to Hawaii and New York and I want to teach science,” Gavin Ray said.
“I want to learn how to be an art teacher and I want to go to New York,” Edith Rubio-Waldo said. “I want to give money and I want to teach Spanish.”
