KANSAS CITY — Game 5 of the ALDS started off rough for the Kansas City Royals with Houston blasting a two-run shot in the second inning, but Johnny Cueto showed dominance after that as the Royals won 7-2 over the Astros.

The win sends the Royals to the ALCS against the Toronto Blue Jays, who beat the Texas Rangers 6-3 on Wednesday to advance.

Houston got on the board first when an error put a runner on in the second inning and Luis Valbuena capitalized with a two-run shot off of Cueto.

The Astros couldn’t do much against Cueto after that as he ended up with eight strikeouts in eight innings. He only gave up two hits.

The Kansas City bats came alive in the fourth as Lorenzo Cain singled with one out and Eric Hosmer drove him in with a single to get Kansas City within 2-1.

The bottom of the fifth inning started with Salvador Perez getting hit by a pitch, Alex Gordon hitting a ground-rule double to right and Alex Rios driving them both in with a double to give the Royals a 3-2 lead.

After a sacrifice bunt got Rios to third, Ben Zobrist doubled down the left-field line to take a 4-2 lead.

Kendrys Morales provided more than enough insurance runs in the eighth inning with a three-run home run to put Kansas City up 7-2.

Wade Davis earned the save by retiring Houston in order.
