COLE CAMP — After the first day of the Kaysinger Conference volleyball tournament, Cole Camp and Stover are atop pool A and pool B, respectively.
Top-seeded Cole Camp finished pool play with a 25-17, 25-7 win against La Monte and a 25-5, 25-10 win over Windsor.
Alyssa Oelrichs led the way with 31 assists combined in the two matches. She had six aces against La Monte.
Bailey Heimsoth combined to have 16 kills. Lyza Jamerson totalled eight kills.
Stover cruised past Northwest, 25-11, 25-6, but had some struggles against Otterville.
After the Lady Bulldogs won the first set 25-12, Otterville got out to an early lead in the second set and kept it close throughout.
Stover was able to make a run to close it out with a 25-19 win.
Mallory Uptegrove totalled 29 kills, four aces and three blocks for the day.
Lacey Buck had 39 assists and eight aces.
For Otterville, Delanney Stone had four kills, two assists and a block in the first match with Lincoln. She also had a block in the Stover match.
Natalie Schoen had five assists against Lincoln and a pair of digs against Stover.
Green Ridge got off to a hot start in both sets against Sacred Heart, but the Gremlins were able to use a 9-0 run to win the second set after losing the first.
“Overall I thought we played really good defense against Sacred Heart,” said Green Ridge coach Lori Larimore. “We moved the ball around well in that first set.”
Green Ridge ran out to an 11-4 lead in the second set before Anna Callis’ kill got the 9-0 run started.
A block for Laura Wadley and another kill for Callis got the Gremlins within two.
Callis gave Sacred Heart a 12-11 lead with another kill and Green Ridge hit the ball out of play to cap off the Sacred Heart run.
Green Ridge was able to power back and had a 22-21 lead, but a serve into the net and a hit into the net gave the lead back to Sacred Heart.
Green Ridge then hit it out of bounds to put the Gremlins up 24-22.
Katie Gibbs’ kill made it a one-point game, but Callis slammed a spike over for her 10th kill to earn Sacred Heart the split.
Callis ended up with five digs. Hannah Orell had nine digs and Maddie McLain had eight digs.
“It was nice to play defense,” said Sacred Heart coach David Fall. “In the first game it didn’t look like we were ready to play. The second game looked like they were ready to play defense. That’s where it all starts.”
Sacred Heart also set the ball to Hannah Wilhoit successfully for her to tally nine kills.
“I thought when they were getting sets they did much better,” Fall said of Wilhoit and Callis. “… When we got the opportunity we know they are capable of swinging.”
Sacred Heart cruised past Smithton later in the night, 25-4, 25-7.
Green Ridge came out strong in its second matchup of the tournament against Tipton, winning 25-3, 25-15.
Quincy Scotten totalled 16 assists for the day. Madison Barnes had 14 assists.
Bailey Harding had 13 digs and Haley McCarthy had nine digs. Merry Allen had 10 aces.
“We had really good serving and we really challenged them with our serves,” Larimore said.
Green Ridge and Sacred Heart are tied for the top spot in pool C with three set wins and one set loss each.
Pool play continues at 9 a.m. Saturday when Stover plays Lincoln and Sacred Heart plays Tipton.
Otterville will match up with Northwest and Smithton will battle Green Ridge at 10 a.m. Saturday to finish pool play.
Consolation bracket play starts at noon and championship bracket play will start at 1 p.m.
The third place game will be at 3 p.m. with the championship game following at 4 p.m.
