A bumble bee seems to be putting its breaks on mid-air as it approaches a colorful saliva flower Monday afternoon at the Merci Boxcar Gratitude Garden on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. According to the Missouri Conservation Department, there are approximately six species of “Bombus” in the state.
Lifting its heavy Bombus body into the air takes a lot of energy, but this bumblebee seems unfazed as it flies to the next flower for nectar Monday afternoon. Information provided by the MCD says bumblebees nest below ground. Nests can have as many as 100 worker bees and unlike honeybees, only the queen survives the winter; all the other bees die.
