State Fair Community College performed a consecutive historic first kick Wednesday in Sedalia.

Hosting Kansas City Kansas Community College for a scrimmage, Lady Roadrunners women’s soccer opened its inaugural season with a scoreless draw.

Head coach Eddie Horn said the back four of Kristen and Julia Lacy, Morgan Coffman and Brie Bullock led a solid defensive performance. Kylie King and Sarah Loomis split time at goalkeeper.

“The back four, for sure, get a lot of credit for keeping our defensive shape,” Horn said. “Kylie King made a great save in the first half, which was probably the best chance of the game that they had.”

While scoreless, Horn said midfielder Maddie Davidson helped create promising scoring opportunities.

“We didn’t quite connect on the chances, but I thought her vision to find people, especially in the diagonal, was really good,” Horn said.

The Lady Roadrunners play again in its first regular season game Saturday, Aug. 20, at Columbia College. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m., directly after the men’s team faces Cougars at 4 p.m.

Before traveling together Saturday, the two teams have practiced together in the mornings, which eases the workload for Horn, head coach of both teams. Both teams were two separate practices per day, but have recently started working out together for its first practice.

“After about four days of (separate practices), I can’t keep that up. I was just falling behind on too many other things, because there just wasn’t enough time in the day. We do a combined session in the morning that’s mainly fitness and technical stuff, and have a separate practice in the evening. Now, when school starts, we won’t do any combined, we’ll just practice once a day.”

Classes begin Monday at State Fair Community College.
