4-H, FFA youth compete in State Fair horse show through Sunday

Mikaila Livingston, of Harrisonville, a member of the Cass County Hillside Cavaliers 4-H, gallops her horse around poles in the Coliseum on the Missouri State Fairgrounds on Thursday afternoon. Livingston and her horse, Spirit, were competing in the class two pony pole bending competition during the 4-H and FFA Horse Show. She received a score of 31.499 and was given a five-second penalty for hitting a pole. The 4-H and FFA Horse Show, the first competitions of the 2016 Missouri State Fair, opened Thursday and will run through Sunday.

Thursday afternoon, Maclyn Crutchfield, 19, steams and forms her sister Mallie Crutchfield’s western hat before she participates in the 4-H and FFA Horse Show this weekend on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. Mallie, 14, a member of Silver Spurs 4-H in Lee’s Summit, will compete in showmanship, western and English classes. Maclyn said she wasn’t showing this year but would participate in the 4-H Show Last Ride on Saturday night.

Sophia Farnan, 12, a member of Guys and Gals 4-H in Richmond, gives her fourth place ribbon to her parents Danny and Heather Farnan Thursday afternoon outside the Coliseum. Sophia and her horse Miranda had just finished competing in the first event of the day, the class two pony pole bending competition.

Youth warm-up their horses in the MFA Youth Livestock Arena Thursday before competing in the 4-H and FFA Horse Show hosted inside the Coliseum. The show will continue at 8 a.m. today in the Mathewson Exhibition Center. Start times for shows Saturday will be 7 a.m. in the Coliseum and Donnelly Arena, with an 8 a.m. start time in the Mathewson Exhibition Center. On Sunday, shows will start at 7 a.m. in the Coliseum and 8 a.m. in the Mathewson Exhibition Center.
