Prepping her horse, Hazen, Rachel Holsten, 14, of Lone Jack, a member of Pleasant Hill 4-H, gets ready for the English Equitation competition Saturday hosted inside the Coliseum on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. Holsten said this particular competition focuses on trotting or cantering the horse in a pattern. Pettis County Youth Specialist Kay Sparks said 42 youth and 54 horses from five counties were participating in the annual Pettis County 4-H/FFA Horse Show.
Faith Fenton, 19, a member of the Lone Jack Future Farmers of America, works to cinch a strap on an English saddle for her horse, Custom No Crome, on Saturday. Fenton was preparing to compete in the English saddle division during the Pettis County 4-H/FFA Horse Show in the Coliseum on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. She has previously placed first in showmanship with her horse CHF Mojo, a spirited half-Arabian.

Youth from Boone, Cass, Jackson, Johnson and Pettis counties participated in the day-long show.
Silhouetted by the bright summer sun, M’Sharra Peters, 14, of Raytown, a member of Union Chapel Lions 4-H in Holden, leads her horse Mocha to the Coliseum to participate in the western saddle division of the Pettis County 4-H/FFA Horse Show on Saturday. Peters said she loves horses but the competitions were “tough.”
