On Saturday during the 28th Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony for 2nd Lt. George A. Whiteman, Sharon Berry Still, of Chillicothe, whose husband was a nephew, and Ross Williams, a nephew from Springfield, lay a wreath at Whiteman’s grave at Memorial Park Cemetery. The annual ceremony is in remembrance of Whiteman, who died during World War II at Pearl Harbor. The former Sedalia Air Force Base was renamed as Whiteman Air Force Base on Oct. 1, 1955, in honor of Whiteman.

American Legion Post 642 Commander Joe Cochran, right, and Sedalia VFW Post 2591 member Walt Von Holten retire the colors as the Whiteman wreath laying ceremony came to a close at Memorial Park Cemetery late Saturday morning. Cochran then presented the flag to WAFB 509th Security Forces Company Commander Lt. Col. Jeffrey F. Carter. Carter was also the guest speaker for the memorial service.
After the wreath laying at Memorial Park Cemetery, Becky Imhauser portrayed “Eve” at the Whiteman Corridor sculpture in Katy Park. Imhauser said “Eve” represented a woman that Whiteman’s mother, Mrs. Earlie Whiteman, could have been friends with when she received the news of his death. Imhauser said she chose the name Eve because it means “life.” “I picked that name because of the life that was given and the lives that continue to be given,” she added.
